Codes and Conventions

Codes and conventions are normally made up of setting, themes characters, light, plot, narrative and props.
Setting: is where abouts the film is set.
Theme: The theme shows how something effects the audience or the characters themselves.
Characters: This is the key part of the film as if we didn't have a character there wouldn't be a film.
Narrative: This is pretty much the same as plot, it's the story line itself and how everything goes on in the film.
Props: Props are what the characters and using and what is in the shot.

Analysis of films use of codes and convention

The Hunger Games (Action)

The setting is based in a training camp where the people who are competing in the hunger games are training to fight, this tells us whats going on and what they're having to do. The characters we see in the opening all have very strong personalities as we see them training for the big game. our protagonist Catnis at firsts seem very different from the rest as she looks shocked at her opponents abilities, her partner is also seen as quite weak in this clip as his abilities does seem as good as everyone else's in the room. Very low key lighting is shown in this scene as it builds tension and shows us that everyone is working hard. I think the low key lighting is effective as it does build a mood within the film and shows the determination of the characters and how 'dark' the hunger games actually is. The plot of The Hunger Games is about our protagonist Catnis -who is in District 13- who takes her sisters place in the hunger games by choosing to go in. They go through extreme training to learn new skills when they go into the games and learn how to hunt and kill. The games is all about survival, the last one standing wins but as Catnis and her partner falls in love the ending takes unexpected turn as both come out alive. The main props used are the weapons in which the contestants use to kill each other and hunt.

Scream (Horror)

The opening of Scream immediately depicts a young girl at home, the creators of Scream would of used this setting to make the film realistic as it's a casual domestic setting to which the whole audience can relate to. In this clip we only see one character out of the two which has opened the film. We see a stereotypical teenager at home on her own when she gets a mystery phone call of the antagonist but we don't see their face yet. The Lighting used is well lit as we enter the house but as we see the outside its a mixture of natural and faux lighting. I think why the creator has used a well lit setting is because it is still using the idea of the relatable domestic environment, this also links to the plot of the story of the antagonist choosing a normal relatable teenage girl who is home alone when she gets a mysterious phone call of a kill who starts off as someone who just wants to 'talk' and then ends up as a psycho killer. The props used are normal everyday props of cutlery, telephones, e.t.c.
